Saniya's Literacy Learning Story

Learning Observed
During our Literacy sessions, the learners in Mrs Dillner’s groups work on the Daily 5. This is a programme that has five components - Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Someone Read, Word Work (spelling, vocab and parts of words) and Work on Writing.
These learners were spending time doing Word Work by play a game of ‘Go Fish’, using a pack of cards with basic sight words.
All four learners were having a great time playing this game. Everyone was participating and addressing each other by name. They used the correct speaking frame of “(Name) do you have the word ______”. At times, they all got a little carried away in the middle of the  game, and will need to work on this next time they play.

Key Competencies/Vision Principles
This game was an excellent example of collaborative learning. It is a great way to encourage the learners to use and understand the English language (Using symbols, language and text). One of the rules requires learners to match the pairs of high frequency words. They need to connect these words verbally and visually and the one learner who has the most pairs at the end is the winner. At times, it was a challenge for these learners to work calmly, but they did all understand the rules and played well with each other (Relating to Others).
Next Learning Steps
  • Ask the other’s for a word using the proper name for the word instead of spelling it out.
  • Work in a calm manner.
  • Work with Mrs Dillner to come up with new words to add to the game.

Squares Maths Group Measurement Learning Story

Learning Area: iDevelop - Maths: Measuring with cubes
Learning Observed
The Squares maths group has been looking at measurement - the language of measurement and how measurement works.  This session was focused on how to make guesses (estimates) and measure using objects found around the habitat.  The object we were using was cubes.  The group decided this would be a good thing to use because they are all the same size.  Today we used an outline of Saniya’s body to make our object to measure and the group decided which body parts we could estimate and measure.  The learners had to guess how many cubes they would need to measure different parts and it was exciting to find out who was the closest! When a new cube was added the group was able to say whether it was too long or too short.  When we started measuring Saniya told me that the cubes had to start at the line otherwise the answer wouldn’t be right.  The group enjoyed measuring all the different part and have asked if they can do an outline each to see who is bigger than who.

Key Competencies/Vision Principles
The learners in the Squares group are developing their capabilities in measurement.  They are able to discuss their answers showing that they understand language, symbols and text. All of the learners were able to work together and take on different roles within the task, which demonstrated participation and contribution and relating to others.
